Richard's Story
"There's nothing romantic about riding freight trains," Richard will tell you if you ask about his years as a modern-day hobo.
After losing everything in a devastating divorce, Richard started drinking it would last for 10 years. "I've been drunk in a whole lot of cities," recalls Richard. "I'd pray all the time, 'God please fix me. I don't want to be an alcoholic.'"

A pastor challenged Richard to do something about his situation. "For some reason, Seattle's Union Gospel Mission just popped into my head as the place I should go," recalls Richard. "The pastor bought me a ticket and gave me some food and I was accepted into the program."

Today, Richard helps out at the Mission cooking meals and mentoring other men. "I remember how I was when I first came into the program," says Richard. "It's just really nice to see them grow." In August, Richard celebrated 2 years sober. "If it weren't for people giving to a place like this, I'd probably be dead by now," says Richard. "For my need to drink to have been removed the way it has been is nothing short of a miracle."
